Updated August 20, 2008: The 2008 School of Rowing has concluded. Please visit this page in the Spring of 2009 to register for the next season.
Rowing is one of the fastest growing recreational sports. Most students have no previous rowing experience, but are proficient rowers by the end of the class. Rowing utilizes a sliding seat, which allows one to exercise the three major muscle groups; legs, back and arms as well as the heart and circulatory system. Rowing works the body symmetrically, tightens the stomach and develops flexibility and a long, lean musculature. In 2007, the Minnesota Boat Club launched the MBC School of Rowing, an expanded program that includes our traditional Learn To Row (LTR) program at the MBC boathouse in downtown St. Paul and the new Learn To Scull (LTS) program at the Lake Phalen Sculling Center.
For both programs, the first session starts after Memorial Day and the last session ends in August. Class schedules for each program are shown at the bottom.
Learn To Row
All Learn To Row sessions are held on the Mississippi River at the MBC boathouse on Raspberry Island in downtown St. Paul. In the Learn To Row program, you will learn basic rowing technique, water traffic patterns and proper handling of equipment. Former rowers will benefit from the class as a refresher course. The session will begin in the boathouse, then onto the water in a safe rowing boat under the close supervision of a qualified instructor. The majority of the class time is spent on the water to give students the maximum opportunity to develop their skills. Team rowing will be emphasized as single rowing will not be taught in the class. Please note that rowing instructors will determine if weather and/or river condition will allow safe rowing in rowing shells.
Each Learn To Row session includes 10 hours of instruction spanning two weeks. There will be two instructors per session and up to 12 students per session. A minimum of eight students is required in order for a session to be conducted.

Learn To Scull
All Learn To Scull sessions are conducted from the Lake Phalen Sculling Center at the St. Paul Park and Recreation’s Beach House on the south end of Lake Phalen in St. Paul. In the Learn To Scull session, experienced MBC sculling instructor will teach you the basics of rowing in a one-person recreational sculling shell such as the rowing stroke, water safety, rowing terms, and equipment care and handling. Like the Learn To Row program, the majority of the Learn To Scull class time is spent on the water to give students the maximum opportunity to develop their sculling skills.
Each Learn To Scull session includes 9 hours of instruction spanning two weeks. There will be one instructor per class and up to 7 students per class. A minimum of five students is required in order for a session to be conducted.
